Causes of Tonsillitis

• Bacterial infections, such as streptococcal throat infections
• Viral infections, like those causing the common cold
• Children, especially those in close contact with peers at school or play, are more susceptible to the germs that cause tonsillitis.

• A doctor can confirm a tonsillitis diagnosis through a physical examination. If tonsillitis occurs frequently in adults, the doctor may suggest a CT scan of the nose and sinuses for further evaluation.
• In most cases, acute tonsillitis can be managed with medications and typically resolves within a few days.
• For tonsil removal (tonsillectomy), a skilled ENT surgeon may utilize traditional cold instruments or modern techniques like Coblation, Laser, or Radiofrequency, which reduce blood loss during the procedure.
• A tonsillectomy may be recommended under specific conditions, such as:
  • For children: When they experience recurrent tonsillitis — at least 7 occurrences in one year, 5 episodes in two consecutive years, or 3 instances over three consecutive years.
  • For adults: The decision is based on the severity, frequency, and pain rather than the number of episodes.
  • When enlarged tonsils and adenoids cause breathing issues, like snoring, sleep apnea, sinus problems, recurrent ear infections, or dental issues.
  • If the patient is at risk for severe complications, such as a neck abscess, peritonsillar abscess, or has a history of streptococcal-related issues (e.g., rheumatic heart disease or glomerulonephritis).
  • If there is concern about a tumor or malignancy in the tonsils.

In addition to medical treatment, home remedies can help alleviate symptoms:

• Saltwater gargles: Gargling with salt water can help clear mucus and soothe the throat. Gargle 2-3 times daily.
• Throat lozenges and sprays: These can help moisten and coat the throat.
• Warm drinks: Soups or teas with honey or ginger-tulsi tea can provide comfort.
• Cold foods: Ice cream can provide relief from tonsillitis pain.

Once the tonsils are removed, tonsillitis can no longer occur. However, if some tissue remains after surgery, there is a possibility of infection or enlargement.
