Tinnitus is a condition in which individuals perceive sounds or noises in their awareness, even in the absence of any external stimuli generating these sounds. People afflicted by tinnitus frequently experience auditory sensations like ringing in the ears, as well as other noises such as roaring, whistling, buzzing, clicking, or hissing. Because these sounds do not have an external origin, they are exclusively audible to the person affected by tinnitus.

Tinnitus afflicts approximately 15% to 20% of the global population, with severe impacts on the quality of life observed in 1% to 3% of these cases.
